Why The Care Corner Exists
The Care Corner was created to support families and caregivers navigating life after a stroke. While rehabilitation focuses on the patient, caregivers are often left feeling overwhelmed, unprepared, and unsure where to turn. This space exists to offer clear, compassionate guidance during that transition — from hospital to home and beyond.
The Care Corner began during a research study comparing how caregivers and rehabilitation nurses viewed caregiver readiness after a stroke. While working on that study, I spent a lot of time with families at the bedside — watching them learn, wait, worry, and try to understand what came next. It became clear how meaningful it would be to create a space where caregivers could learn and find support right there while visiting their loved one.
That idea grew into The Care Corner: a simple, welcoming resource that turns clinical information into practical, compassionate guidance families can actually use. Support from Texas Woman’s University (TWU) helped make this possible and allowed the resource to grow in an accessible, sustainable way rooted in evidence‑based practice.
This work is also deeply personal. I’ve been the family member sitting in a hospital room after a loved one’s stroke — scared, overwhelmed, and completely unprepared. That experience, along with the many caregivers I’ve worked with over the years, shapes everything here.
At its heart, The Care Corner exists to blend research, clinical insight, and lived experience — offering caregivers trustworthy information, comfort, and the reminder that they’re not alone.
